Case study – Fort Dodge Animal Health

Knowledge Without Borders partnered with Boehringer Ingelheim (formerly Wyeth), Iowa Central Community College, the Iowa Department of Economic Development and several school districts in Iowa to show educators how a global animal health company creates jobs for Iowans through product development, manufacturing and distribution.

At the Fort Dodge Animal Health facility, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. (formerly Wyeth), practices corporate responsibility in Iowa communities. The plant focuses on research and development of new products while improving old ones through ongoing training and educational opportunities in animal health. The company, Iowa Central Community College, and the Webster County School District have forged a partnership that prepares local students for global careers.

Working with the local community to encourage young people to stay in Iowa through careers in the animal health pharmaceutical industry, Iowa Central Community College offers professional development opportunities for educators interested in inquiry-based learning for high school and community college students. Teachers participate in a week-long summer professional development workshop that presents ”real world” simulations of the 21st centuryknowledge and skills routinely used by professionals and support staff in the pharmaceutical industry, which include critical thinking and collaboration, multidisciplinary knowledge, strategic planning and decision-making skills, and data analysis and communication skills.

Boehringer Ingelheim contributes to this annual summer professional development week through employee participation in the workshop as well as a tour of the local animal health manufacturing facility.  Teachers participate in question and answer sessions with a broad range of employees – from research scientists to lab technicians. They learn that Fort Dodge Animal Health, located in their local rural community and employing the parents of many of their students, is part of a global company made up of employees of many cultures. These conversations highlight the importance of communication between business professionals and educators as a first step toward sustainable partnerships that create a bridge between the worlds of  school and work.
